Physiotherapy treatment protocol

Physiotherapy treatment begins with PRICE, which means protection, rest, ice, compression, and lift. Protection includes the use of clamps to prevent abnormal joint movement and further damage. 

Rest is important for damaged structures and allows parts to settle stress-free. Cryotherapy, or cold/ice treatment, is helpful in relieving pain and swelling.

Physical therapists may use manual therapy for joint stiffness or pain and this allows the physical therapist to improve joint shear motion and allow for more normal joint mechanics. This reduces joint stiffness, loosens joints, and reduces pain so you can start strength training. 

Static exercises are used initially with restraints, turning into active exercises without support.

Balance and coordination are retrained until the ankles become good at rough terrain, running, and jumping. The ankle has healed when the pain has subsided, movement is good, strength has returned, and proprioception, or the sense of joint position, is restored.
