Daylight Analysis In The Design Process Of Residential Buildings

Sunlighthouse is a VELUX Model Home 2020 residential construction located in Austria. The main objective of the Model Home 2020 initiative is to create environmentally-friendly low-energy buildings with a strong focus on the health and well-being of their occupants. Daylight Factor

The pictures below illustrate the simulation of the daylight factor of the floor (left) and the first flooring (right). The calculation of daylight factors is an accepted method of assessing the levels of light (at the height of the workplace) across the various rooms in the house.

The possibility exists to create specific zones imported into geometries to generate additional data, such as the minimum, maximum media, average, and Daylight Factor and uniformity indicators, and generate an HTML report that contains all these numbers.


Apart from other than the Daylight Factor, the daylight performance of Sunlighthouse was also assessed through simulation of the illuminance levels across the house in different seasons of the year and various sky conditions. The following two images illustrate the levels of illuminance in the dining area under the conditions of a CIE middle sky on June 21, (top) and on December 21st (bottom) at noon.

The numbers displayed on the grid on every image are displayed in the lux. The glaze appears black since it is regarded as an energy source, and thus is not a reflective surface.
